Olfactory Research Notes: Smelly Books with Sergej Rickenbacher (online)

Professor Sergej Rickenbacher joins the Institute for Art and Olfaction for the latest talk in the IAO’s Olfactory Research Notes series, sharing his research on aroma in literature.
During this talk, Professor Rickenbacher will discuss the role of odor in literature, with a focus on German and French texts from the 19th century to modern day. With a focus both on literature and the physical book, he’ll discuss important texts that highlight the sense of smell, as well as the various odors associated with books, and the material processes that produced those smells. His presentation will be followed by a question and answer session with attendees.
ABOUT SERGEJ RICKENBACHER
Dr. Sergej Rickenbacher is the Chair of German and General Literary Studies with a focus on Forms of Knowledge at RWTH Aachen University. His research focus includes literature and knowledge, smell and sensory history, and literary mediology.
