A Black woman and a South Asian woman’s experiences of GLP-1 in menopause

26 February @ 19:30 - 20:30
Join us for an intimate, lived-experience event exploring GLP-1 use during perimenopause and menopause.

Menopause weight changes are common, but honest, culturally sensitive conversations about them remain rare.

Beyond Discipline is an intimate, lived-experience conversation between one Black woman and one Asian woman, sharing their personal journeys with GLP-1 during perimenopause and menopause. Moving beyond diet culture and willpower narratives, the discussion focuses on hormones, appetite, access, and what it feels like when women are finally believed about their bodies.

This event is intentionally small to allow for reflection, safety, and nuance. Places are limited, and booking early is recommended.

This is not a weight-loss workshop, medical consultation, or promotional talk. It is a respectful, non-judgemental space for menopausal and perimenopausal individuals, and those supporting them, who want to understand lived experience beyond headlines.

This event is primarily for Black, Brown people and people of colour – everybody is welcome.

Join us via Zoom to discuss perimenopause and menopause. This is an open discussion for menopausal and post-menopausal people.

We cannot give medical advice in this setting, but you will have the opportunity to ask questions.

So please come prepared or send across your questions in advance via our social media X formerly known as Bluesky @blackmenopause.bsky.social or Twitter @blkmenopause or Instagram @blackwomeninmenopause or email info@blackwomeninmenopause.co.uk or just ask on the night.

So join us for this online event. We want to eliminate the stigma associated with what has been a not so discussed topic, but a hugely important topic, and assure you that no questions are too small or embarrassing, and no question is a stupid question.

Anita Powell is a menopause and women’s health advocate, community organiser, and peer-support facilitator with a strong focus on supporting Black women and ethnic minority communities. She is the founder of Menopause Alliance CIC and Black Women in Menopause, where she creates safe, culturally relevant spaces for women to speak openly about menopause, ageing, health, and identity.

With a background in grassroots community engagement, patient advocacy, and PPIE (Patient and Public Involvement & Engagement), Anita works closely with healthcare professionals, charities, and lived-experience networks to bridge the gap between medical information and real life. She is also the host of the Black Menopause & Beyond podcast and a regular speaker at both community and national events.

Anita is known for her honest, trauma-informed, and practical approach, centring real women’s experiences, particularly those often overlooked in mainstream menopause conversations.

Sandra Weerasinghe is a short, impatient, over-50 South Asian powerhouse in construction, she proves every industry stereotype and survey dynamic wrong. The only thing longer than her to-do list is her arm reach when she’s pointing out issues on a building site. She has survived a hysterectomy for stage 4 endometriosis and adenomyosis, and she’s still here, standing tall (not literally; ladders are essential).

In a male-dominated industry, she is a rare combination: small (but mighty), sharp (mentally and verbally), and built to last. Her impatience comes from knowing time is finite, and she has a crew to train, projects to push, and a reputation to uphold with calloused hands and a cracked sense of humour. Ignore her at your own peril. She does not tolerate being overlooked, but she is a formidable mentor to the next generation of female project leads.
